Sawa Africa Community Development was founded in June 2011. The word “Sawa” is Swahili for equality, among the word’s many other meanings. Our team consists of four core members: Heini Mynttinen, Heli Nissinen, Niina Lääperi and Sannakaisa Janhonen. We had been planning to set up an organization for development cooperation for a number of years. The final decision to found Sawa Africa was made late 2011 after some of our members had visited the village of Ebukhaya in Western Kenya.
The people of Ebukhaya made an everlasting impression on us. They had established a school for underprivileged children of the community entirely by the help of volunteers of the community. We chose Ebukhaya as our organization’s first project also because, to this day, the school does not receive any funding or any other kind of support from outside the community.
In spring 2013 Sawa Africa started supporting Mungoma Support Group also located in Western Kenya. Most of the donations send to Mungoma are spent on feeding program for children and teachers and covering the expenses of the school. Sawa Africa is also funding community based income generating projects in Mungoma.
We would like to thank all our donors for making this happen. The good work shall continue!
